Changes to the Forums

I mentioned recently my decision to begin slimming down the site’s administrative overhead by focusing on what it is (a blog) through some minor strategic outsourcing. Having recently graduated and moved into the Real World, I no longer have the ample free time that I was so fortunate to have at school. What follows was a difficult decision for me to make, but in the end serves only to better all of our lives: the forums will immediately cease operating at their current location.

For those faithful forum goers, don’t panic! I have great news: effective immediately, the aaltonen.us forums will live on as poweredgeforums.com! All member accounts, passwords, posts and PM’s have already been transferred to the new site, ready for business as usual. Although I will no longer be involved in the day-to-day operation of the new site, I will continue to participate as much as time allows, and I have the utmost confidence in the new ownership and their ability to continue the legacy of the forums: offering an invaluable resource of information for those striving to obtain the best performance and value above and beyond the manufacturer’s intentions.

I will also add my sincere thanks to all of those who have contributed time and money to keeping the site running for these past few years. Rest assured this decision was not made in light of any financial hardship, so do not feel compelled to offer donations to keep the forums alive. It is simply that I cannot offer the quality of service that was once present.

I will field any and all questions and comments below.

  1. this is a real shame :( I am not sure where abouts the specialist dell knowledge will be obtainable.

this is a legacy and I would like to wish you the best of luck in the “real world” its not all that just filled with timescales , bordem and bills.

stay safe – don’t blow your “real world” wages on credit before you get paid.. :)

  2. Many thanks for everything you have done; and congrats on your relocation into the ‘real world’ ;) You have provided an invaluable resource that’s been more than beneficial to thousands of proud Dell deal hunters. Would you be willing to give a copy of the phpBB database to someone who’s willing to keep it all running?

  3. This is sad. These forums have been a great service to me and to others. It was this forum that convinced me to buy my first 400sc and have never regreted it. I knew that if I ever ran into a problem, I knew where to go for help.
You have done good here. It’s going to be missed.
    Thank you and good luck!

  4. It is a shame but I wish you the best of luck in the real world. I started my career with IBM Boca Raton in the “old days” when the PC was just being created, you will not regret working for Big Blue. I, like many others, bought my first 400SC based on the information I found here so this site will be sorely missed. Now where to go to chat about my new 1800? Good luck Oliver, it’s been a pleasure.

  5. Thanks for the support! I have great news: I’m currently in discussion with a helpful individual regarding a migration of the forums. Stay tuned for more!

  6. Say it ain’t so Joe!

These forums are one of the best sources for Dell related discourse currently on the web — especially now that the Dell Customer Support forum has gone belly up as well.

I strongly hope that you are able to migrate the forums to someone else rather than shutting them down!

  7. While I can understand your need to make the change, I am sorry to hear of it. Your site has been an invaluable resource of information. The effort you put forth to make it happen is indeed deeply appreciated.

I hope the migration to another individual will succeed. Best of luck to ya.

  8. I echo what everyone else here says. This site has been a great source of information, and I’m sorry to see it end (I’m crossing my fingers about the forum migration news).

Thanks for providing the forums, and best of luck with your “Real World” endeavors – I’m sure you’ll be quite successful!

  9. I’d like to thank Oliver Aaltonen for the opportunity to continue the legacy which he built. We have taken great care to import all the existing member profiles, posts, threads, and PM’s into a brand new vBulletin forum.

    Please bookmark the new URL:

    Sincerely,
    RossMAN

  10. Thank you Oliver for keeping the forums up for the past several years. Many of us really appreciate the time and effort you spent keeping up the site. You will do well in the Real World.

And many thanks to you, RossMAN, for picking up this legacy.

  11. Recently I bought two Dell SC420s using them as desktop running XP Pro. I found your forum very helpful. I wanted to use the ATI X700 graphics card, and studied the various ways people successfully overcome the problem putting in the PCIe-X16 card in the PCIe-X8 socket. After experimenting off and on for a week, I found a totally different method, involving no x-acto knife or propane heater. Since my method is so simple, I was going to post it in your forum. I am sorry I am just too late to let other people sharing my findings.

    Best of luck to you.

  12. Just another offering of thanks to both Oliver and Ross.

Oliver, you’ve undoubtedly helped so many current owners and would-be PowerEdge buyers. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve personally referenced your site, or directed others to it.

As for the future, one could not ask for a better individual to step forward to keep the benefit of the past work and contributions yet to come than Ross.

Former aaltonen.us users, you’re in quite capable hands.

All the best wishes for the future, Oliver.
