Download: Gmail Utilities

There are already few neat little utilities available for Gmail:

First, there is Mbox & Maildir to Gmail Loader (discussion). This neat little application will take any archive of your mail in mbox format and bounce it to your Gmail account, much like I did using Pine, but easier! Download for Windows or Linux. To use, run: gml.exe [mbox or maildir] [mbox file or maildir path]
[gmail address] [Optional SMTP Server]
. Unfortunately, this tool doesn’t get around Gmail’s received timestamping. All of the message you bounce will show up in Gmail as received at the time the Gmail server received the message. Viewing the actual emails or searching reveals the correct time.

If you want to work the other way and grab all of your Gmail via POP access, there are a couple utilities: Pop Goes the Gmail (discussion) and eMail2Pop. They are both utilities that sit between the Gmail web server and your email client of choice, converting messages from web format into POP3 so they can be retrieved with your email client of choice. Download the free PGtGM here, or visit the eMail2Pop site for an evaluation version.

For those of you migrating from Yahoo, you can use YahooPOPs and Thunderbird to retrieve your mail, followed by gml on the appropriate mbox files to transfer it to Gmail. To redirect your Yahoo, Hotmail or MSN mail to your new Gmail account, use GetMail.

If you’d like a new mail notification for your system tray, download gtray. Unfortunately, it’ll only use IE to open your Gmail account.

For those Gmail users upset that mailto: links open another email client and not your Gmail, check out G-Mailto, which associates the mailto: links in your browser with Gmail, opening a compose window automatically.

A lot of people have been talking about using Gmail’s massive storage space as a remote data repository. Sure enough, someone whipped up a script using PHP and libcurl to send and retrieve arbitrary files to and from your Gmail account. It’s only available as source right now, but it’s just a proof of concept; it’d be real simple for one to create a web interface.

  1. I’d like to add my program to the “Gmail notification” section of your post.

My program, called gNotify, monitors your Gmail account and notifies you via the systray when you have new mail.

Screenshots and more information are available at:
