Tip: Free T-Mobile Internet Access

Previously, I wrote about my success using CSD to dial-up to the internet with my Nokia 6610 phone on the T-Mobile wireless network.

It turns out anyone with basic T-Mobile’s t-zones WAP service can connect via GPRS to the internet. There are a few different T-Zones plans, but the basic T-Zones service included with the family plan I am on works fine. There are many benefits to connecting via GRPS: the phone is available for voice communication while connected, there are no charges for the amount of bandwidth used or even for the time you’re connected, and it’s faster than the 9,600 bps limit of CSD connections.

For me to connect successfully, I first changed the GPRS access point on my phone to wap.voicestream.com. After having done so, I connected the phone at my laptop running Windows XP via IR. Then, it’s a one-time matter of setting up a “dial-up” connection that will tell the phone to connect. To accomplish this, I created a connection that dials *99#, with a blank username and password, and all other settings left at the default. Once this connection is setup, I just “dial” when my phone is linked to the computer, and a GPRS connection of 115.2 Kbps is established immediately with T-Mobile.

Unfortunately, connecting via the free T-Zones plan has a few additional drawbacks. The free connection through wap.voicestream.com gives you access to only a few ports. Only ports 25 (SMTP), 80 (HTTP), 110 (POP3), 143 (IMAP), 993 (IMAP, SSL) and 995 (POP3, SSL) are accessible. With the for-a-fee data services T-Mobile offers, this problem is resolved. Fortunately, for my use — web browsing, sending and receiving mail — this doesn’t pose a problem.

Update (4/15/04): It appears all ports are open. I do not know how long this has been in effect, but I’ve just been able to use ports 22, 3389, and 2065 successfully, therefore I’m assuming the port access limitations have been removed — at least on my account.

Also, after using the connection for a while, I noticed the actual connection speed, while reported as 115.2 Kbps, has a real-world speed of around that of a 56 Kbps modem (34-45 Kbps).

Thanks to T-Mobile for offering this free service!

I am using a Nokia 6800 with Windows XP via Infrared. I have the $4.99 “Unlimited t-zones” plan. I am able to connect by dialing *99# and using wap.voicestream.com as my gprs access point, but I am only able to connect to email ports (25 and 110), I can’t connect to any websites (port 80). Anyone have any ideas? Is my plan just out of date?

I am having the same problem. I am using a gateway laptop and a samsung e105 t-mobile phone with t-zones.

I can connect fine, and use the e-mail ports, but I cannot browse the web on port 80 or do anything else. Is there a way to open the ports or browse the web from a different port? Please help.

    hi
all those using t230 and are unable to connect to the internet or have very slow connectin dothe following to increase speed to 11500 bps
    1. the driver does not seem to be compatible with windows xp.
    2. it runs fine under windows 98
    3. in windows 98 install the modem driver through the installer provided and not windows hardware detection.
    4. install it on the port on which you have installed your data cable . or better install it on all ports.
    5. make a new connection and connect using the newly installed modem
    hope it helps you

    Hi guys;
I just figured out that instead of having tmobile internet for 19.99 you can have tmobile web for 5.99 and browse most of the internet ports. This allows WAP connection as stated above and requires just a couple configurations. For my Nokia 6600 I went into Tools –> Settings —> Connection –> GPRS and under access point I typed wap.voicestream.com and then I setup the internet connection on the laptop by dialing number *99# and no username and pwd. After setting this I went into connect —> modem and aligned the phone next to my ir port on the laptop and then used my connection to dial out.

    This works great.

I’ve been able to connect my k700i to my laptop via bluetooth to go online using t-mobile service. Although the connection is established, i also can’t manage to get any data transfer to browse anything on my laptop, even though browsing on my phone works perfectly. Are there special settings that i may not be aware of? I’ve gotten all the settings for the phone from the SonyEricsson site thru an sms that is sent as soon as u punch in ur phone and carrier specs. As far as i’m concerned i’m doing everything right. I even tried establishing a connection using IR port, in case its a bluetooth issue, but still no browsing capabilities… What am i doing wrong?

Found this out with my wife’s phone after we got identical razrs and would get the PPP failure error like several of you are reporting when connected with her phone. Could connect perfectly with mine though. I had unlimited t-zones service on my phone for $4.99 back from when that service was offered. Those services are phone specific so even though my wife can still get to the free t-zones she actually didn’t have access through wap.voicestream.com. So I just went ahead and spent the $5.99 a month to get her t-mobile web so she can surf when I am not around. Actually whats cool is I kept my land line dial-up service as well and connect with both.

    Hi all,

This article was posted on March 23rd, 2004. I knew at one point in time that you can browse T-Zone free with some tweaking on your connection setting awhile back. However, T-Mobile has fixed that security hole long time ago. I don’t know this trick is related to that security hole since it’s an old article.

T-Mobile now offer T-Mobile Internet, which is different from T-Zone. T-Zone ($5.99/month) supposed to be limited access to certain info using your phone only and T-Mobile Internet ($29.95/month) is what you can use the phone as an Internet gateway. Therefore, I don’t know if this trick still works. It would be pretty dumb on T-Mobile’s side if they allow free browsing via T-Zone connection while offering T-Mobile Internet, don’t you guys think? If anyone is able to use T-Zone service to PC connection (either via Bluetooth, cable or IrD) and successfully browse the net freely, please let me know. I’ll go subscribe my T-Zone right away. :)

I’ve been able to do this perfectly on my Nokia 6610 via infrared on a Pocket PC using dialup to *99# and internet2.voicestream.com as my gateway. It did not work until I switched from the old T-Zones service to the T-Mobile Internet.

But, I am having problems with this on my laptop. I use a DKU-5 and can communicate perfectly with the 6610 to sync my calendar, send wallpapers, ringtones, etc. between phone and laptop.

Getting it to dial to get on the Internet is hit and miss. Sometimes it works, most of the time it does not. The laptop goes to dial, but just sits there before it reaches the point to dial (If I recall it’s ‘connecting’.)

Any ideas to get this to work?

    Thanks,
    Tony, CA

Hey, guys. If you are connected, but are having issues routing to websites, set your proxy to: 216.155.165.50 PORT: 8080 and im using a Motorola V188 using a USB cable and the Windows generic GSM USB MODEM driver. Hope this helps you out!!!

Getting the cellphone to work like a modem in Linux requires the cdc_acm module.

The modem command sequence which works for me:

    ATZ
    ATE0V1
    AT+CGDCONT=3,”IP”,”wap.voicestream.com”
    ATD*99***1#

The pppd options which work for me:

    /dev/usb/ttyACM0
    115200
    defaultroute
    usepeerdns
    nodetach
    crtscts
    lock
    noipdefault
    noauth
    local
    debug
    lcp-echo-failure 4
    lcp-echo-interval 65535

Set the 216.155.165.50:8080 proxy for everything, not just http. Do not override mtu or mru. The default values are the fastest.
